Contentment

I confess that I haven't been really actively searching for a natural beauty of the month for May and I think I know why.

I used to browse the pages of the "Natural Hair" group on facebook everyday like it was a religion. One day I went on a facebook fast and I pretty much never went back on it as much as I used to and I all but stopped looking at the "Natural Hair" group.

I think this is one of the best things I could have ever done for myself, my sanity, and my hair. What I discovered in retrospect was that I was comparing my hair to everyone else's hair that I saw on the group site, which led to discontentment.

I thought I was doing a good thing by looking at all these images of gorgeous black hair and all its various textures, but as the saying goes - "too much of a good thing."

I found myself saying "I wish my hair was like this...why can't my hair do that...I wish my hair could do that." I was not truly embracing and loving my hair for itself because I was too busy comparing the hair on my head to the hair on everybody and their mama, and looking back now, it was seriously one of the most frustrating times in my natural hair journey.

So, I guess the conclusion of this post would be a message and a reminder to all natural hair folk out there to remember the old adage..."Too much of a good thing." Its all well and great to look once in a while and admire other natural hair, but you don't have to do it every single day. Or even look at the pictures for longer than one hour in one day.

Too much of admiration will eventually lead to comparison, which will lead to discontentment, which leads to frustration. This is a lesson I have learned in my natural hair journey, hope it helps even one person out there.

But I think I'm strong enough now to go looking for a natural hair beauty of the month because we can admire in moderation, just not in excess....too much of a good thing.
